John Makepeace OBE FCSD FRSA

John Makepeace's career can be described as an adventure in wood.  He first saw fine furniture being made when he was eleven, and again when he visited the great cabinet makers in Copenhagen as a teenager.  Craftsmanship came naturally to him and his thirst for design led him to work his way around the United States before starting his own workshop.

Early professional recognition led him to travel widely as a design consultant in India, Japan and Australia leading to his becoming a founding member of the UK's Crafts Council. Major commissions have come from Templeton and Keble College, Oxford, Liberty's, Banque Générale du Luxembourg, as well as museums, and both corporate and private collections around the world.

John's approach stems from his broad interests in the arts, architecture, material science, technology, the natural environment, and patterns of group behaviour, resulting in solutions that encourage the enjoyment of furniture as an articulate expression of our time.
