'Eighteen' Chest

Designed for an exhibition in the Stock Exchange building in Hong Kong, and opened by Lord Patten, this luxurious piece of craftsmanship was acquired by the late John Bryan for the collection at Crab Tree Farm, Illinonis.  A play on the number 3, the bottom drawers of this cabinet are three times as deep as the top ones, and the wide drawers three times the width of the small ones.  They have central guides to ensure smooth running and the ‘open’ structure enables each drawer to be seen from all sides.

The use of the very decorative burr elm veneer is clearly expressed on the internal and and external surfaces whilst the structural components are made of contrasting English will cherry.  The quality of the hand-cut dovetails confirms the superb craftsmanship throughout.

Materials: Burr elm veneer, cedar drawer linings, hornbeam runners and bronze handles  Circa: 1996
