'Mitre' Chair
Designed to celebrate the silver wedding anniversary of HM Queen Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh, for use with a chess set by Malcolm Appleby in gunmetal inlaid with gold, and silver inlaid with ivory; this Macassar ebony chair has a woven nickel seat and back. It's unprecedented form echoes that of a bishop's mitre. At the time, I was keen on using this rare and exotic timber before recognising the extraordinary beauty of wood grown in Britain, like holly and mulberry (see Millenium Chair) Since the 1980's we have ceased using tropical timbers in favour of the wonderful variety of indigenous woods from our sustainably managed woodlands.
Materials: Macassar ebony, nickel silver Circa: 1978
