Three of the seven chairs commissioned by Plymouth University to seat presiding dignitaries at major occasions attended by exceptionally large audiences.  Therefore, the bold form of the chairs is a response to the need for a commanding presence.  Three large chairs feature the University’s heraldic shield and four smaller ones are for the Heads of the different schools.

Made of cast aluminium, and English oak planted at Longleat in 1740 when landowners were being encouraged to plant oak for the construction of future battle ships.  It was harvested 240 years later in 1980.  It seemed especially appropriate that this oak should go to Plymouth, the port where battles ships were built and set sail
